Shipwreck viewpoint OFF LIMITS!

You may recall last week a fire ban. The road closed to shipwreck point.

Restrictions in place.

The Civil Protection Department of the Ionian regional offices, on advice from Vice-Governor Mr. Niotopoulos, have implemented a ban on all traffic to the shipwreck. This means the road to the shipwreck viewpoint will be closed, at least until the fire season is over on 31/10/19. Unless otherwise notified.

Traffic signs.

No entry traffic signs were posted last Friday.  While a day earlier, Thursday the 15th August,  a police vehicle was  on the road blocking access.

We must remind you that Shipwreck viewing point has only one road in and the same road out.

Therefore the decision by the Zakynthian council was due to safety reasons. As our Island is under high risk fire alert,  high winds also increasing the fact of a possible fire could break out. Although the area is very well known for tourists to visit, the council under the circumstances believes the safety of our visitors comes first. In an emergency situation it would be impossible to get the necessary help in the area if needed.

Making a decision.

The decision by the Zakynthos Municipal Council in putting  up prohibited signs for access to the road starts from the Holy Monastery of St. George of Kremnos and ends at the viewpoint of the Shipwreck.

There is also an alert for the Bochalis area, due to high winds over the next few days.

Taking into account the Forest Directorate’s document and the dangers it posed to our visitors. Also a possible scenario for trapping visitors in the area in the event of a forest fire or other emergency. The decision by the municipal council was overwhelming in favour the restrictions.

Please note this also means parking in the area.  Leaving your car in the forest area to walk down is also forbidden. Authorities removed number plates from those who chose to leave their cars parked in the area.  The area is restricted!
