The green light for the Monastery of Strofades

The green light has been given for the restoration and repair works of an amount of € 14,000,000, for the monastery of the Strofades.

 

 

 

The process of programming was finalized with representatives from the Ministry of Culture, the Metropolis Church of Zakynthos and the Ionian Islands Region.

After 30 years of constant efforts by the Metropolis Church of Zakynthos and often against the deceitful promises that were received for the restoration and salvation of the Castle type Monastery of Strofades, which is situated in Stamphani from the 13th century, when it was built by the Emperor of Nica Theodoros Laskaris),  was finalized yesterday at the General Office Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Maria Andreadaki – Vlazakis, in the presence of the Ionian Islands Representative Theodoros Galiatsatos, the Bishop of the Metropolitan church Chrysostomos, Archbishop of Zakynthos, Dionysios and the Deputy Provincial Governor of Zakynthos, Eleftherios Nyotopoulos, the program contracted was for the activation of the procedures required to capitalize on the total funding of      € 14,000,000 (€ 10,5 million from the Smart Specialization Platform and 3,5 from the Ministry of Culture) to fully restore the historic monastery from the damage it  suffered by the earthquakes, but also from deterioration caused over the years, and as it has not been subjected to renovations from the last time which was done by the Emperor John the Palaiologos, around 1440.

At the same time, the Regional Chief has proposed that the Secretary General of the Ministry endorse the prospect of becoming the Castle Monastery of Strofades as an international center of religious, cultural and environmental interest “through a Memorandum of Understanding which should established between the Metropolis church , the Smart Specialization platform, and the National Marine Park of Zakynthos.

At the same time during the meeting, the Ionian Islands Regional Director asked the Secretary General of Culture to speed up all the procedures necessary for the exploitation of the Ionian cultural monuments in order for the Smart Specialization Platform to be able to issue directly Invitations of Interest, of the NSRF 2014-2020, to fund other cultural monuments.

Also, at the meeting, a joint decision was reached between the Ministry of Culture and the Smart Specialization Platform representative, for the restoration of the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli, Kefalonia, where it exists today, with works of repair and further promotion of the Museum.

Finally, the Ministry of Culture undertook the obligation to rebuild the Archaeological Museum of Zakynthos.
