Tourism:- Minister states. “Flights from abroad as of July 1, should not be cause for public concern”

Civil Protection Deputy Minister for Crisis Management Nikos Hardalias said on Thursday,”The plan to allow direct flights from abroad as of July 1 should not be cause for public concern”.  As the plan is to reopen Greece to tourism gradually and cautiously after the global pandemic breakout.

During the daily briefing on coronavirus measures and developments along with Health Ministry task force spokesman Sotiris Tsiodras, Hardalias said several factors would be considered. The factors would include studying on what is happening in other countries and which countries would be exempted based on their epidemiological features.

“Random sampling and controls will be thorough and strict wherever necessary, in order to keep the general population safe,” he noted.

Flights into Athens.

Currently, flights are limited to the Athens International Airport, where travellers submit to a coronavirus tests and have to follow quarantine protocols. “Absolute numbers (of incoming flights) show a reduction and near-disappearance of incoming infection cases,” Hardalias said.

Between May 13 and 20, for example, 21 flights arrived in Athens with 2,236 passengers, of whom only 1 was found to be positive. In the last 4 days, 3 flights from Germany have arrived with 548 passengers, several as transit travellers through countries with heavy epidemiological loads, but all tests were negative.

He reiterated the reopening of travel to and from the Greek islands and the opening of restaurants is taking place on Monday, May 25.

No test or quarantine according to what was announced. It is estimated that our country will receive visitors from countries with good epidemiological data such as Germany, Bulgaria, but also Baltic countries, which will be the main “market” for tourists.

According to the report, the first countries most likely to send visitors to Greece are: Cyprus, Israel, China, Japan, Australia, Norway, Denmark, Austria, Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, Albania, Northern Macedonia, Bosnia , Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

The second wave.

The second wave, which will start on July 1, will bring visitors from other countries, in addition to those with negative epidemiological characteristics.

Visitors to Greece will not be required to perform a covid-19 detection test, nor will they be required to enter quarantine, but authorities are reserving the possibility of sampling tests on visitors. With the exception of a very unpleasant surprise in the fight against the pandemic in the Schengen countries, there are increasing experts who estimate that by the end of June the borders will be released for almost all countries in this zone. Of the key markets in which Greece has significant inflows of travel spending, only Britain and the United States are estimated to be slow to be included in those that receive the green light.

According to the plan of the Ministry of Tourism in the areas of security, it is to strengthen the health capacity of the areas, and in this context, a cooperating doctor will be appointed with each accommodation as the first point of evaluation of the cases. At the same time, each accommodation will have a coordinator, in order for the cooperation of the doctor with the coordinator to help to maximize the management of any cases that will arise and the communication with the Civil Protection.

The second axis concerns the management of cases, with the accommodation doctor taking care in the first year and at the same time there will be care for special areas for quarantine per destination and provision for transfer to a medical facility if this is deemed appropriate. For the small island destinations, as the Minister pointed out, separate business plans were developed for each of them, launching the placement of 20 new analysts for testing and at the same time securing 600 Covid beds in order to cover every possible need.

Other announcements.

The government will also announce whether the primary schools, kindergartens and nursery stations will open on June 1 or not.

Additionally, the government will reopen day centers for people with disabilities, including art activity centers for children with disabilities, this coming week.

All other art activity centers will be included in the decision related to primary schools.
