Tourists Covid positive after Zakynthos holiday

Reports have been coming in of confirmed Covid cases in Plymouth, Devon in the UK, relating to tourists aged 18 and 19yr, who have recently returned from Zakynthos. We understand that 11 have definitely been confirmed as having Covid, but as many as 30 could be infected.

Most of those tested are said to have minor symptoms such as a sore throat, or no symptoms at all, and were unaware they had Covid upon returning from their holiday, so went about life as normal. We understand this included going to work and visiting local bars. The UK track and trace system was implemented after the first case was discovered, and those in contact with that person were then located and tested. Some reports state that a number of local businesses may have since closed for isolation, as precaution.

A statement has been made by Ruth Harrell, public health director of the local council. In it she said “We know that some of these young people had no symptoms, and so carried on as normal, including a night out in Plymouth’s bars and restaurants, until they became aware of the risk,” she said. “That means more people could be infected. While young people might have fairly mild symptoms, and sometimes none that you would notice, our big concern is that we know it can be very serious for people who have existing health problems or are older. While we are still below the point of triggering a lockdown, this incident just goes to show how easily life can change. We all need to remain vigilant, whatever age we are, and take proper precautions.”

Local and national UK news reports have all mentioned the connection with Zakynthos, but there’s no confirmation as to where those who have tested positive for Covid in Plymouth, actually caught it. It’s difficult to ever be sure and no one will ever really know, as from what we understand, none of those who tested positive in Plymouth ever reported feeling unwell whilst on the island.

Covid cases in Greece are still much lower than the UK and the number of cases in Zakynthos are smaller still. The island has a good testing and tracing systems, the health guidance on masks, self isolation and other precautionary measures is very clear and is well adhered to by both locals and visitors. There is also no requirement for UK tourists to quarantine themselves, upon return to the UK, after visiting Greece.

We have been in contact with the relevant authorities, who have kindly provided a press statement. Names of those involved, and the length of stay on Zakynthos has not been released to the public. We should therefore not jump to any conclusions, just because those involved in the Plymouth cases happened to be on the island previously. We do of course wish them good health and for those experiencing symptoms, a speedy recovery.
