Mr. Petsas stressed that early next week, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will send a message to the Greek people and explain the next steps towards lifting the restrictive measures.

The government spokesman reiterated that the process of lifting the restrictive measures would be “slow and lengthy” and asked that on the first three days of May Day, the measures successfully implemented on Easter would be implemented.

He also stressed that the government’s intention is to stop the obligation to send SMS and a written certificate from those who want to move as soon as the reopening of the stores begins.

“Remember why we took action”

The government spokesman reiterated that our country is experiencing an unprecedented crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic and throughout it “we show a high sense of individual responsibility and collective maturity, in a new normality where many people’s habits and behaviours will have changed “.

He said that today we can talk about this new normality “because the strict, unprecedented measures we took early on, worked. And they worked because we followed them. All together in a special moment of individual responsibility and collective maturity”. It is clear that “the success of the measures taken is reflected in the diagrams of the cases and -unfortunately- of the victims compared to other European countries with similar populations”, he added and showed graphs depicting this course.

“This image is not for us to file or for each other,” he said. “It’s to remind us from the beginning why we took these measures. So that many don’t get sick at the same time. So that the health system doesn’t collapse from the simultaneous admission of patients. So that we don’t bring our doctors and nurses to the situation we saw before. and in the most developed countries, that is, with despair, they have to choose who will live and who will die. ”

The summit.

Mr. Petsas started the briefing with reference to the meeting through a teleconference of the European Council and the ongoing meeting of the EPP in which the Prime Minister participates.

“Leaders are called upon to discuss finding appropriate solutions to the common problems posed by the European Union and its member states to the coronavirus pandemic. One of the key issues on today’s agenda is the creation of a European Economic Rehabilitation Fund. innovative financial instruments. The positions of our country are known “, Mr. Petsas stressed. He explained that these positions were developed in time by the Prime Minister in a joint letter with 8 other European leaders to the President of the European Council.

The first, which is the cornerstone of the European edifice, as the government spokesman pointed out, is the position of principle that “common problems require common solutions”.
