Turtle hatchlings thrown in the sea

From news we received late last night it seems that tourists, as well as some boat owners, are not respecting our treasured Caretta Caretta (turtles).

This year a number of turtles have chosen to nest outside of the designated marine park area of Laganas Bay and Vasilikos peninsula.

Sadly though some tourists are still getting too close. Last night a report came through to us that “some tourists and their children” were picking up turtles, putting them in buckets and throwing them into the sea in an effort to “try and help them.”

This is not only the wrong thing to do, but it is also highly distressing for the creatures.

We have written some comprehensive guidance in the past about the turtles, in association with ARCHELON, and people need to be aware that whilst turtles are beautiful creatures no one should be handling them and ARCHELON rules should always be followed.
