Urgent and necessary interventions at the Castle of Bochali

The interventions at the Venetian Castle of Bochalis, and more specifically in the Minotto basin, which after the earthquake of 26th October, face even more serious dangers of landslides, with the implications for public safety and of course for the Monument itself.

Pending awards for the second phase of supporting work at the Minotto basin and the 180,000 Euros announced after the earthquakes!

After the winter of 2016, when floods hit the island, landslides and instabilities were created in the Castle area and after some months of waiting, a restoration and support project was carried out on part of the slopes that ended the A phase of works. These rescue interventions under the supervision of the Department of Rehabilitation of Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture saved the Monument during the recent powerful earthquake, but it is absolutely necessary to complete it with the implementation of the second phase of the project, after funding has been secured and the assignments again with the provision of the Ministry.

We remind you that in the first announcements that had taken place only 24 hours after the powerful earthquake last October, the MP of Zakynthos also mentioned an emergency funding of 180,000 Euros for immediate interventions for the Castle of Bochalis, but since then it is unknown whether the money has been paid or whether it will be used to finance the second phase of the interventions, for which there is still no information.

The only thing that is certain is that the earthquake did not leave many of the archaeological monuments without damage, which also now need care and rehabilitation, while the problems related to the storage facilities of the Museum are well known. We remind you that the Ephorate of Antiquities has requested the transfer of its offices to the Building of the Armed Forces in order to accommodate materials and antiques from the warehouses on the premises of the present offices, but the request has not yet been heard.
