Armed with bats and sledgehammers and wearing hoods a group of some30 vandals smashed shops windows in the expensive commercial center of Athens, at Voukourestiou and Valaoritou streets.
At the same time they chanted slogan in favor of granting furlough for the convicted member of the terror organization ’17. November” Dimitris Koufontinas.
Nine shops with brand names of luxury products and jewelries as well as two banks suffered material damage. The attack took place at 8:30 Thursday evening while the shops were open with staff and customers inside. Nobody was injured.
Police detained 15 people and released twelve a few hours later. Three foreigners reportedly remained in custody for issues related to their documents.
Earlier, the group had staged a solidarity protest outside the Athens University.
Koufontinas who is on hunger strike since May 2 has been denied furlough on the grounds that he does not meet the criteria for furlough.
It should be noted that both the USA and the United Kingdom have strongly protested the previous furloughs granted to the man who has been imprisoned 11 times for life.
Koufontinas has already been granted six furloughs.
On Friday morning, a group of people shortly occupied the offices of daily Avgi, the newspaper affiliated with ruling SYRIZA. The group chanted slogan for Koufontinas furlough.
