Part of being a volunteer has its benefits. I think the best part of it all is seeing a smile on someone’s face once the action has been completed. Especially on those who have had it very difficult. Knowing that they are not alone and that someone out there is by their side gives comfort.
Volunteers behind the scenes.
As a member of The Volunteer Group of Zakynthos, we get a chance to do a range of things and over the years people have come to trust our work. Just the other day a volunteer, who wants to remain anonymous bought 150Euros of shopping vouchers and also helped a family whose son had recently been in an accident. You might say that this particular person has money and that they should help. However, this could not be further from the truth.
Our special friend who I will call Bi. She, herself , was in difficulty, she actually had her electricity cut off as she could no longer pay her bills. A volunteer helped her out and thank goodness she is now back on her feet. Wanting to give back what she received, she had no hesitations calling me and asking if there was a way she can help. Obviously, our team was willing to help and in turn, today other families are able to breathe just that little easier through her volunteer actions.
You may ask why do we promote such things?
It is through our posts that people have become aware of what is happening in their community. People have come together where the government are unable. Those who do donate can see that their efforts have gone to good use and that their donations have been delivered directly to those who need the help. People can see firsthand where we have intervened and it has always been with the thought that the outcome will be for the good of all.
No time but a big heart.
Some of us seem to stand out more than others because of the promotion. Unfortunately, like in so many situations there are always those who have to take lead or are put in a position where they have time so things can be organized. This does not mean however, that the person behind the scenes is in any way less in their actions. A prime example is that of our special friend.
Volunteering offers vital help to people in need and not only. Worthwhile causes can be put into action to solve problems within the community. However, the benefits don’t just help in general but can be even greater for you, The Volunteer.
