WHIRLWINDS AND HYDROPHONES

In 2018 there were 107 tornadoes recorded in our country, namely whirlwinds and hydrophones,  3 of which caused significant damage in Halkidiki and Crete. The majority of tornadoes (99) were hydrophones, which were created and remained above sea areas without creating problems.

The number of tornadoes, in 2018 in Greece, ranged in the average of the past 10 years, as well as the number of powerful whirlwinds that caused damage.

The small size and duration of tornadoes makes it difficult for them to be observed and recorded, so the records that we have theoretically form part of the total number of whirlwinds and hydrophones actually occurring. The spreading of social media and the use of smartphones has greatly helped to capture all weather phenomena. A typical example is that users of Facebook and Twitter of Meteo Gr reported 63% of siphons in Greece in 2017 and 52% of total reports in 2018.

References of citizens and weather surveillance cameras are almost the only means to capture this impressive phenomenon.

In the map, you will see the areas where tornadoes were recorded, in 2018 in our country, 99 of which were hydrophones and only 8 tornadoes. In all of Europe 628 tornadoes where recorded in 2018.

On rare occasions, under particular weather conditions, many hydrophones are created in a short period of time, for example on 21 January 2018 in Corfu, when 32 tornadoes were observed in about 2 hours. The last picture in the report shows this “family of hydrophones” as they are called in southwestern Corfu. The meteo.gr team thanks Yannis Gasteratos for his many reports from Corfu, as well as George Papavassiliou for his valuable help in recording tornadoes.
