Zakynthian “Kefi” cheer! (Video)

During the coronavirus restrictions a number of groups have come together to entertain. This particular group is no newcommer to Zakynthians. It is the cultural group of Sarakinatho along with a few friends that are also well knon here in Zakynthos. The cultural group is well known for their traditional dancing groups and not only.

The group decided to combine the diffierent activities they have, that being music, dance and song.

They sing a typical Zakynthian song called, ” A tree I had in my yard” ( Δέντρο είχα στην αυλή μου). These types of songs tell a story. They usually have a lead singer telling the story. Each sentence is repeated by a choir whilst daning.

This story is about a person who planted a tree and watched it grow with great delight. First it blossoming and then watching its leaves grow. Finally the tree grew apples and how happy the person was to see them ripen. The happiness however didn’t last long.

As soon as the apples were ready to pick a thief took all the apples, taking the leaves and the blossom with him, whilst leaving the person sad with a bare tree in his yard. The dance you see is a typial Zakynthian style called “syrto”. A dance that is part of Zakynthian tradition.

Enjoy the video.
