Zakynthos Airport

Closer to completion this year is the upgrading of the 14 regional airports that have been granted to Fraport Greece for 40 years. At the same time, according to the concession contract, the completion of the projects is expected to bring an adjustment of the charges from EUR 13 to EUR 18.5 per departing passenger.

In particular, in 2018 the upgrade works were completed at the airports of Chania, Zakynthos and Kavala, for which a certificate of completion of works by an independent engineering company will be issued in the near future, a process carried out by the State. The granting of this certification, as well as the consultation of the airlines – a process that takes about 4 months – are necessary prerequisites for the fee to rise from 1 April.

Prior to the start of the concession, charges were set at 12 and 22 euros for the zone outside and within Schengen, respectively. At the start of the concession, the fees were re-adjusted to EUR 13 for all categories of zones (inside-out Schengen).

As a result, all the projects will be completed in the next two years at the 14 regional airports whose termination time is 48 months in accordance with the concession agreement that came into force in April 2017.

Upgrading work at Intrakat’s 14 airports is totaling a total budget of € 357 million, with investments (planned and already implemented) of € 415 million. As stated by the head of Fraport Stephan Schulte and Fraport Greece CEO Alexander Cineel in an interview with the German financial inspection Wirtschaftswoche, the company will place 100m euros more in relation to the original design, considering that by 2020 investment in Greece could be profitable.

In terms of passenger traffic, in 2018 the increase was 9%, compared to 2017, with the number of passengers being placed at 30 million.
