A great start to the season it seems Zakynthos is showing, in regards to our yearly visitors the famous Caretta-Caretta.
For those who do not know what a Caretta-Caretta is, it is none other than the loggerhead sea turtle.
Zakynthos has become one of the most important nesting grounds in the Mediterranean for these special species.
The first loggerhead sea turtle nest for 2019 in the National Marine Park of Zakynthos was spotted by the volunteers of ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece on 25th May, on the beach of Gerakas in Laganas bay. While last year 2020, around the same time. The beach of Kalamaki (Crystal beach area) hosted the first nest for the year’s spawning season. It seems this year in 2021, Gerakas beach has taken the title once again.
Zakynthos Informer will be awaiting the official press release by ARCHELON and The National Marine Park of Zakynthos to bring you more information about our visitors until then we wish all involved a great season.
