The environmental bill, and more specifically Article 93, which concerns us directly, was submitted for consultation, even for a short period of time, during which teleconferences were held between Mayors, the Region and Ministries.
Initially, the new Board of Directors of the Public Limited Company was expected to be five members, but finally, after the acceptance of our intervention, there will be seven members, in order for the Municipalities to be represented by each Regional Unit. In this way, all the islands are protected and everyone will have a voice within the Board.
The new Regional FODSA will have as its object the management of waste without collection, which will remain in the competence of the Municipality. The order we received today from the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Grafakos, was that the regime of waste collection does not change.
Recycling also remains in the Municipality of Zakynthos. We will see what solution can be given in this regard, perhaps with a program contract that will need to be made, between the Municipality and the Region.
Nothing is changing in what has been planned so far and it concerns the factory in Liva and the Waste Landfill, after recycling-sorting at source (XYTY) and in this regard we are in collaboration with the Mayor of Zakynthos Mr. Aretakis. We want the procedures of the international electronic tender for the contractor to be completed as soon as possible, so that we are ready in two years from now.
The labour relations of the employees in the current FODSA of Zakynthos will be maintained as they are in the new body. Nothing is changing with the new Regional FODSA, it will be a PLC.
We have all the guarantees from the government that it will provide us with the necessary tools to operate this new body properly, in which I reiterate that the Municipalities will have the strongest opinion, since they will own 60% of the shares, with the Region having the 40%. In the Board of the new FODSA will be chaired by the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands Mrs. Kratsa, but the decisions will be taken by the Municipalities, all together. Nothing will change in terms of cleaning fees.
As for the new section of Ionian Islands that will be set up and will concern the protected areas, after the vote on the environmental bill, it seems mature and reasonable to have its headquarters in Zakynthos.
As a Regional Unit, we convened a meeting yesterday to see how ready we are for the opening of schools, namely the 3rd year Senior High from next Monday. We have been extensively informed by the agencies, and I believe that we are ready to open the classes safely. All prescribed health measures will be observed. We asked that during each break, the halls and the toilets be cleaned. There will be two cleaners only for the students of the 3rd year Senior High. Where needed, the KTEL will put more buses. We do not stop being vigilant. Everyone will implement the prescribed measures. From Monday, the services of the Health Department of the Region will be in the schools and will check on a daily basis if all the hygiene rules are observed. We will not allow anyone to play with students’ health.
