Zakynthos Hospital still remains without critical medical specialists.

There is no ophthalmologist at the Hospital of Zakynthos and this was one of the issues raised during the meeting with the Hospital Administration during the meeting that took place last Tuesday.

The issues of the Pediatric Clinic, the Intensive Care Unit and the EKAB are in the forefront, which are the most pressing, but the problem of not having a specialist in Ophthalmology, also will be highlighted in the up coming rally on February 14th,  has been pending for many years.

As mentioned during the meeting with the Director of Hospital, Mrs  D. Tsaridou and the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr A. Potamitis, the permanent doctor who had been appointed to the Hospital, several years ago has been postponed to a another position from 2014 at a Clinic in Athens. The position still remains open, despite the fact that our own Hospital does not have an ophthalmologist, purely on the grounds that the specialized knowledge of the particular doctor, is that he is most needed in the hospital where he is currently serving as transplants are also performed.

What has been highlighted many times by the Hospital Administrator is that the decision to postpone was taken, despite the fact that the hospital’s suggestions were negative and demanded the return of the doctor to the clinic in Zakynthos.

Today, our hospital is still covered by the First National Health Network (ΠΕΔΥ) doctor, who is also called to serve the dozens of incidents that have recourse to IKA surgeries.

What needs to be emphasized is that a large portion of our fellow citizens are required to be examined by an ophthalmologist for enrollment in schools, sports clubs and more.

It is noted that in addition to the ophthalmologist, there are shortcomings in other specialties such as a microbiologist, hematologist and dermatologist.
