Zakynthos:- Huge clean-up campaign at famous “Shipwreck & Blue Caves.

A huge campaign over the weekend saw volunteer groups around Zakynthos joining forces. Their goal to clean up one of our most famous beaches “Shipwreck’

Notification on one of the group’s FB page read as this:-

“The “ZaCLEANthos” and “Green Activist Group” Teams …

After what tragically we saw at the world-famous and flagship of our tourism, “NAVAGIO beach., have decided to take drastic measures in the area, of cleaning the area, without claiming ANY subsidy from ANYONE!

We start immediately with at least one cleaning per week for the whole season, and we will not stop if measures are not taken so that it is not needed!

With us in this effort, “Porto Vromi Maries Cruises-Fun” and “Zante Sun Travel”

Which will be available to us FREE whenever we decide together, boats to move and so on …

Also with these two companies, together we undertake permanent cleaning from KERI to Blue Caves, at least once a year. Like a big action beginning and end of the season every year, back to the Shipwreck.

PS Our strength is the selfless volunteers who have become more and more every day!”

The teams certainly kept to their word! Cleaning the area they collected 85 large garbage bags and around 250 kilos of scrap. Included in the above teams there were also behind the scenes volunteers including barrage Club, Black Bean, Pleassas Food Market and Zakynthos Informer, all to promote environmental awareness.

Zakynthos Informer spoke with Dimitris Kladis, head of the “Green Activist Group” in regards to the clean up campaign.

“Now the signs of the “threat” that the sea makes on the shipwreck during winter can be seen … it’s scattered everywhere!

Pieces are constantly falling off; the waves are passing through it!

Results of the uncontrolled mooring of the boats that have “eaten” the beach in front,  over 25 meters in all.

After the collection the waste was loaded up and taken to our waste management centre in Liva.

A video of their efforts can be seen here:-

We say thank you and a huge round of applause is given to the volunteer groups once again. However, one cannot help wonder what our authorities are doing in this matter. Is shipwreck cove just another money tree? A tree that soon will be no longer, if we are not going to look after her, she will slowy die.  With the words of Jane Goodall:- You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.
