Greece is always a popular holiday destination in the summer. Figures recently released from the Greek Civil Aviation Authority, in conjunction with the Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation (INSETE Intelligence), have reported the top ten most visited Greek destinations this year between January and June, as based on airport visitor numbers.
Zakynthos is number seven on the list ahead of popular destinations such as Santorini and Mykonos. Athens is the most visited destination.
List of top ten Greek destinations
1. Athens
Greece’s capital Athens received 2,684,000 visitors from January to June 2019 through their international airport.
2. Crete
Crete, the biggest island in Greece received more than 1,581,000 people through both its International airports of Heraklion and Chania from January to June 2019.
3. Thessaloniki
Makedonia, Thessaloniki’s airport received more than 1,014,000 visitors between January and June 2019. The airport also serves the popular destination of Halkidiki.
4. Rhodes
Rhodes International Airport Diagoras received around 798,000 visitors between January and June 2019.
5. Corfu
Corfu’s International Airport Ioannis Kapodistrias received more than half a million visitors between January and June 2019.
6. Kos
Hippocrates, Kos’ International Airport received around 394,000 visitors between January and June 2019.
7. Zakynthos
Our very own International Airport Dionysios Solomos received almost 279,000 visitors between January and June 2019. Popular coach/ferry routes also serve the island but visitor numbers from them aren’t included in the above numbers.
8. Santorini
Santorini has a small airport that received around 179,000 visitors between January and June 2019.
9. Mykonos
Mykonos’ International airport received around 144,000 visitors between January and June 2019.
10. Kefalonia
Anna Pollatou, Kefalonia’s International Airport received around 111,500 visitors between January and June 2019.
It’s good to see Zakynthos in the top ten, and we look forward to seeing how many visitors the island will welcome by the end of the 2019 season.
