Specifically, in the previous period, a document was sent by the Local Council to the Green Department but also to FODSA, The Waste Management Department, for the use of a fire truck that the Municipality has for cleaning areas. The areas where the cleanups took place were behind the Cultural Centre, at the Regional Unit of Zakynthos, behind the Municipal Theatre, at the Tax Office and at the Courts. In fact, a special disinfectant was used, while the workers of the Green Department also cleaned the points from branches and rubble.
“The local council is trying to fill the gap seeing there is no cleaning manager to coordinate the services. Despite the outdated equipment we have, with their diligence and hard effort, they managed to clean these areas that were in filthy condition for so many months, “said President Konstantinos Pettas, who announced that other clean-ups would follow immediately. However, he reiterated that the shortages are serious in cleaning equipment. “Other clean-ups will follow, but with the lack of a washing machine for bins and a special machine for cleaning the square, what we can achieve is little. The Municipality has a washing machine and has not done anything to fix it “.

One issue that the local council had been working on was the removal of bins from parts of the city. In fact, with a decision, the body had requested that they be removed from specific points from Konstantinos Lombardou, Filita, Papaflessa and other streets. Regarding the removal of the bins, Mr. Pettas noted that it was necessary for public health. “The removal of the bins was something that had to be done, because the coastal front is inadmissible, to be in such a dirty state that it was in previous months. The Municipality has the overall responsibility for the location of bins, the investigation of programs for under grounding options and the existence of a cleaning regulation “. He also stressed that a portion of citizens who do not follow the rules have a significant responsibility. “The Municipality bears the greatest responsibility but also our fellow citizens have a responsibility as well, especially when they do not follow the rules and throw wherever they find garbage and bulky waste. We forget that we are “passers-by” and we must protect our place and deliver it better than we received it. “
Finally, an issue that the Local Council stressed that the Municipality should be concerned about is the situation of the garbage trucks. In particular, two of the three vehicles are in very poor condition and need maintenance.
