Zakynthos:- Masks EVERYWHERE! 6 measures you should know to avoid fines.

As of today, Tuesday, November 3, six measures will take effect across the country to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The measures that apply throughout the territory are the following:

  1. Mandatory use of a face mask, everywhere, meaning indoors and outdoors. Boarding a public transport is not allowed without the use of a mask.
  2. Restriction of traffic from midnight to 5 a.m. across the country. Those who travel for work and health reasons are excluded from the measure.
  3. Teleworking at least 50% in public and private sector.
  4. Distance education in all higher education institutions, with the exception of clinics and laboratories of senior students.
  5. Visits to all welfare structures are also suspended throughout the country.
  6. Retail, wholesale, industry, schools, open-air archeological sites, hotels and hairdressers remain open throughout the country.

Heavey fines.

Intensive checks have already started by the Police on our island. Whilst over the last month fines have been imposed for not using a mask amounting to 9,000 euros.  For non-observance of closing times or for standing customers fines have amounted to 20,000 euros.

According to police, shopkeepers comply and abide by the measures, but the big problem remains with the use of a mask, as very few of our fellow citizens wear it.

From today, however, the use of the mask will be mandatory everywhere, indoors and outdoors and the inspections are continuous, so our fellow citizens should be especially careful. Obviously, checks will be carried out on pedestrians and regular fines will be imposed on those who do not wear a mask.
At the same time, the police have set up joint teams that will carry out inspections throughout the day in the city and the villages. In fact, after midnight, DIAS teams and OPKE teams will be patrolling the streets of the island and will make checks for the traffic ban.

Police sources say that the grace period is over and now whoever does not comply with the measures, will face the hefty fines provided by law.
The Deputy Regional Governor of Zakynthos, George Stasinopoulos, states that the controls for the observance of the opening hours in the shops will be intensified, as well if citizens observe the security measures. So far, he points out that the island is at a good level as in the last period, the cases are minimal.

Strict controls will be made by the Directorate of Commerce for the use of masks and for keeping to the hours allowed within the stores, while the Directorate of Health will make controls for the observance of the health regulations.
