Feast Ceremonies of Saint Dionysios.
During the three days from 23rd to 26th of August 2020, Zakynthos, with all formality and in accordance to the Hellenic Health Organisation regulations for the prevention of the transmission of Covid-19, celebrates the return of the Holy remains of Saint Dionysios
**11.00a.m The announcement that Holy celebrations begin. A zakynthian tradition called “SENIO.” You will hear cannons fired, whilst church bells chime. Meanwhile, across the Island you will also hear gunshots. This is a traditional announcement for Zakynthians that their Saint is among the people. We would advise anyone who has pets that are sensitive to noise to take necessary precautions.
On Sunday, August 23, 2020, at 7 pm,
the Descent of His Eminence the Metropolitan of Zakynthos from the Holy Monastery to the Holy Temple will take place. Immediately after will follow a Doxology with a Procession of the seventh Tabernacle of Saint Dionysios inside the Temple and then a Great Vespers will be performed.
On Monday, August 24, 2020,
The official day of the feast, at 2 o’clock after midnight, a holy Vigil will begin.
In the morning, at 7.30, the Orthros Sequence will begin and immediately afterwards the Hierarchical Service will be performed.
On the same day, at 8 pm,
There will be a Prayer before the Saint. The Litany will NOT take place.
During the service fireworks will be displayed and church bells will chime along with cannon fire in accordance to typical Zakynthian celebrations.
On Wednesday, August 26, 2020,
At 8.30 in the morning, there will be a Hierarchical Service.
11.00a.m The commemoration of St. Dionysios’ sepulcher ends within the Holy Temple. Priests will then place Saint Dionysios in the Holy Larnaca.
****The traditional “senio” will take place across Zakynthos announcing that the celebrations have come to an end.
Conditions of entering the Holy Temple.
In the above Holy Communions and Ceremonies, all are invited to attend in an established order
Pious Christians are kindly requested to strictly follow the precautionary instructions from Covid-19.
- all MUST wear a face mask, use a disinfectant liquid and keep a distance of one and a half meters between them.
The entrance to the Holy Temple will be as follows:
From the ramp for the disabled there will be a line for pilgrimage ONLY and a mandatory exit from the south gate.
From the sea side (north gate) there will be provision for people who will enter the Temple for church services, half an hour before the start of the Holy Communions and up to the number of 50 people. It is also recommended to use a mask outside the Temple for pilgrims and attendees.
This year due to covid-19 restrictions the famous Saint Dionysios market will not be open.
Bank Holiday.
On Monday the 24th all shops will be closed in honour of our Saint. However, in tourist resorts you find most will be open.
