Zakynthos Soccer Cup

The Cup match (semi-final) between APS Zakynthos 1961 and Tsilivi has passed into history,  but from this match there are many things that have to do with the multi-problemed Zakynthian team. But the (clear) victory over the opponent leaves the blue-yellow to a bitter taste. And how would it not leave, when the three of this years games, the team of Stathis Karamalikis counts 2 wins and a (defining) defeat that was to judge the championship.

For the match at the municipal stadium we have a lot to say. An APS Zakynthos 1961 unrecognisable – for the better – and a Tsilivi unrecognisable – for the worst. A team that fought a lot and a team that ran out of fuel, that is strength, but above all from a clear mind. No, the game was not the best quality, the truth is. It was a game at a very slow pace, with slow defence and APS Zakynthos 1961 having control of almost all of the game.

Mainly in the second half the “blue-yellows” completely dominated the reds”. The team of Stathis Karamalikis went on the field with 11-players and a single substitute, that of Triantafyllidis. As the Greeks say ‘a good day from the morning shows’, was something APS Zakynthos 1961 proved, by getting to the ball first, creating the first suspicions, for the 200 or more football fans, that it was not be an easy afternoon for the Planos champions.

Patrik Engemas team was odourless, tasteless but also colourless, passionless and without a game plan the “reds” could not make the difference. Zakynthos was the one who threatened at 17′ and 22′, with Serantin and Sourbis respectively, but the shots of both players were not so good. The match went as planned by the technician of Zakynthos, Stathis Karamalikis. First on the ball with suffocating pressing the blue-yellows short-circuited the reds.

In 35′ Bantzio, the striker of Zakynthos was found in the area of Haraktinos but he could not beat Tsilivis goalkeeper, he lost the ball and in its return, Psarris was totally off target. The first good moment for the guests came at 40′ when Liveris, from a good position (slightly side) shoots  the ball which passes over the crossbar of Diamantis. Two minutes later Liveris with a vertical pass found Kakolyris, opposite Diamantis, but in the shot he made the ball went out.

With this 0-0 both teams went to the locker room.

At 48′, the guests came very close to a goal, but the ball  “turned its back on them” as Liveris executed a corner Diamantis, on the exit, didn’t calculate the ball correctly, which ended up at Tsirigoti, who with a header sent it first to the ground and then to the crossbar. From 50′ onwards the home team increased their revs and managed to fully dominate on the turf with Tsilivi being essentially  “swallowed up” by the vast pitch of the stadium.

At 59′, the “ingenious” Serantin, from the side, made a cross but Bantzio  wasn’t able to get to it in time to send it in the net.   One minute later, in a “carbon” phase from the same point Serantin, on his own,  finds Bantzio who up close sent the ball into the net, opening the score for his team. The visitors were not able to react, were tired and mistakes succeeded one after another.

At 65′, after a mistake by the Tsilivis defence, Tzanaris ‘stole’ the ball entering the area and with a nice shot sent the ball to the corner of the goal posts of Haraktinos.  From 70′ onwards the players of Zakynthos if they had been more careful, they could have achieved another goal, since the players of Tsilivi could not seem competitive. At 78′ Sarantin, on his own, entered the area of Haraktinos, went to do something impressive, was confused and lost the ball.

At 79′, Bantzios was found opposite Haraktinos, but Tsilivis experienced goalkeeper saved his team from a certain goal. At 84′ Tsilivi showed that it still had a “pulse” when Giorgiou, with a deep ball, found Kotsas at the back of the defence of Zakynthos, but he couldn’t control the ball. so the opportunity for the guests was lost.

At 93′ Stelios Sourbis, with a spectacular verticle shot “pierced” the defense of Tsilivi, finding Bantzio alone opposite Haraktinos, who calmly shoots to form the final 2-0 for his team.
