The iconic-symbol of Zakynthos, the “shipwreck” seems it won’t be accessible to the public from the cliff viewpoint.
A recent report by the national TV channel “OPEN”, talked about how the area will be “off limits” this year due to a number of reasons.
The first and main reason is that being the safety of people who may visit the area. Another is that the area needs upgrading and the upgrades have not been able to go forward due to a discrepancy over who owns the land.
Τhe area has come under a legal feud between the council, the forestry commission, the Metropolis of Zakynthos, private owners, the local community of Volimes and a company known as Pimana, therefore work on the area cannot be done.
The new fire chief to Zakynthos has let it be known that the area definitely needs a second road so that a “fire escape route” can be planned.
As Zakynthos will be opening her doors to tourism as of the 1st of July, it does not seem that work will be possible. For now, it seems that the only way to visit our iconic symbol is by sea and not by land.
As the report states, businesses are waiting for confirmation as to when and how they will open up their businesses within the area of the viewing platform.
