Zakynthos:- Volunteers in action. Proving more hands makes light work.

Most of us know that Zakynthos has a severe problem when it comes to our waste. Where our authorities have failed, Volunteer groups have taken the initiative to take charge. On a positive note. It seems that there are more Volunteer Groups being formed throughout Zakynthos over the last few years.

Personally, I am proud to see that more and more are helping to clean their home, “Zakynthos”. It also seems that the message is slowly getting through. “Many hands, makes light work”. Your home is not just the building you live in but the whole area. In my case, our Island home, Zakynthos.

Likewise with the volunteers this morning.  A group of 7 people, 4 from the women’s choir of  ΡΟΔΑΜΠΕΛΟΣ (rodambelos) and 3 from the Volunteer Group of Zakynthos. Joining forces the results were amazing!

The area was 50 metres of road along the main road across from the fire station.

The reason? Well, the Volunteer Group of Zakynthos has organised with volunteers to paint the OTE box with a theme concerning our Island. Obviously this theme when finished will attract the eye of all.

However, sadly as they went to visit the area and see what needs to be done they discovered the area was an absolute mess with plastic bottles, cups, plastic bags and more.

Not a nice area for a painting to be displayed. So, the team organised for a clean up today. They meet at 9.30 this morning and set off. It took them less than half an hour and what was an awful eyesore and a disappointing example for our Island, finally turned into an area that we can be proud of.

Half an hour’s work that’s all!!!

Volunteering is something new to Zakynthos.

Zakynthos informer has been involved in many volunteer activities. The most notable was the “boot campaign” where the team of volunteers worked hard to raise enough money to buy up to date fire boots for the 92 firemen on the island. Our team is still continuing in volunteer actions even today.
The first volunteer group was formed four years ago under leadership of Dionysios Nikolopoulos. The group called The Volunteer Group of Zakynthos (Εθ.Ο.Ζα) in which Zakynthos informer members have joined, wanted to make Christmas a little special. They decorated an area in front of the Regional Offices of Zakynthos. From there the idea of volunteering spread and it was mainly by the foreign nationalities that gave the examples.  We now have several volunteer groups around the island and many have formed their own teams within the villages. It’s good to see that foreign nationals who live on the island have helped their community in many ways. The ideas of their own homeland in regards to volunteering and the environment are forged within the Zakynthian community and it is now paying off.   In the video we have 3 volunteers talk about their volunteer actions and their ideas about volunteering.
Go Volunteers… it is YOU that is showing the example that we all have a role in keeping our Island clean and where there is problem, the more that help to solve it, the better the results. Once again Thank you!!
