Representatives From the British Embassy in Zakynthos.

During the three day event of Giostra Di Zante, Zakynthos had the honour of hosting two VIPs from the British Embasy.  HM Consul-General & Consular Regional Director for South Europe, Fleur Wilson and Deputy Head of Mission Consul General, Susan Geary.

The two ladies were invited by Giostra Di Zante, Board of Directors in an effort to keep ties open between the two countries through cultural events. In 2023, Giostra succeeded in this effort with the famous Pipes and Band team from Colchester City, England.  Due to circumstances this year the team were unable to attend. Giostra Di Zante, however still wanted to keep an open invitation for UK representatives to join in the events.

“It was an honour to have the U.K represented once more, making it a second year of concession” said Mrs Morfis, one of the seven board members.  “Our history connects our two countries together and therefore it was important that we keep our ties strong through our cultural event. Giostra Di Zante has become international for quite some years, with a number of teams representing their countries from around Europe, and the U.K should definitely be part of our events even more so due to our historical ties.

We had tried on a number of occassions with Colchester City trying to organise them to take part of our event pre covid, then during covid and lock down, this dream seemed impossible. We were lucky that in 2023 after so many years, we were finally able to get them here. This year unfortunately the dates of our event could not match with their own committments, sadly.  As our local British Consul took part in last year’s event withBritish Vice Consul to Zakynthos and Kefalonia, Matt Delapp representing the U.K we did not think twice about extending our invitation for participation, once again. We were very happy to hear that the two ladies Fleur Wilson and Susan Geary had accepted, obviously after Matt and his team had forwarded the invitation to head office.”

During the three day event they also had an opportunity to visit our authorities, and talk about the problems our island faces in regard to U.K citizens. A radio interview also took place at the English Speaking radio station “Island F.M 88.6 with host Bobby Gee. It was here that U.K citizens could ask questions in regard to living in Greece and in particular Zakynthos. They also talked about Giostra Di Zante and that the efforts to keep ties should continue.
