Kalamaki

Kalamaki is a resort on the south coast of Zakynthos in Laganas Bay, between Mount Skopos and the main resort of Laganas. Despite being next to Laganas, Kalamaki is very different. A family orientated beach resort, Kalamaki is great for couples and is a quiet resort full of amenities such as hotels, apartments, bars and restaurants. An Information Centre provides visitors with lots of useful information about the resort and the island and there are plenty of shops, including supermarkets and places to pick up great souvenirs too. The resort also has a number of bars, but they’re not as lively as Laganas, and suited to all age ranges. Karaoke is also popular in resort.

Kalamaki has a beautiful long sandy beach, edged by shallow, clear seas, perfect for anyone who has children. Many of the shops close to the beach also cater for children providing beach toys and other items to keep youngsters occupied. The Caretta Fun Park centre has entertainment for families including waterslide fun, dodgems, trampolines and bouncy castles, there is also a snack bar. Kalamaki also has crazy golf and for anyone who has a love of speed Formula Zante Go Kart is an ideal afternoon out for children and adults too! Visitors can also rent bicycles and cars in the resort if they want to venture further afield.

As with the resort of Argassi, Mount Skopos that isn’t far. Visitors can climb it to explore the interesting Church of Panagia Skopiotissa, which has an icon of the Virgin Skopiotissa as well as some lovely wall paintings. Built in 1624 the church now sits on top of an ancient temple site that was dedicated to the Greek goddess Artemis, and is surrounded by monastery remains. Panoramic views from the top of Mount Skopos, both across Laganas Bay, towards Zakynthos Town and towards the mainland, are breathtaking.

Situated in Laganas Bay, Kalamaki is part of the National Maritime Park of Zakynthos which is home to the islands endangered Loggerhead turtles. Restrictions are in place on beaches over the summer, but there are still plenty of places for visitors to sit. Pedaloes and Boats trips are available from nearby Laganas, which is also within walking distance and has some nice bars and restaurants and Marathonisi island in Laganas bay is popular with many, as are turtle spotting trips. From Marathonisi you get a great view of Laganas Bay and it has lovely clear waters for swimming. Marathonisi is also a nesting site for turtles so caution on the beach is recommended.

Kalamaki is a great resort for families and couples. There’s lots to do especially for children, and it’s not far from other resorts for those who want to explore a bit more, and it’s also served with a good bus service and taxi network. A perfect place to stay with great amenities and lots to do!
