A very good season is also awaiting the owners of tourist boats on our island, who see an increase as this year a significant amount of arrivals is expected. However, they express their concern about the matter of the Shipwreck, especially in regard to how “Panagiotis” will cope, having already suffered enormous damage.
The president of the Passenger Tourist Boats of Northern Zakynthos, Dionysis Aktypis, noted that we are… at “close call” for the rescue of the Shipwreck… “We have reached a close call. The ship has been irreparably damaged. All this should have been done a long time ago. I think it will be very difficult to restore the ship, and we are in danger of bad weather. Until May, there will definitely be some days of bad weather, winter is not over yet… The ship will disappear. They are already late. All this should have been done years ago.”
Regarding the way in which visits to the beach will be made again this year, he noted: “I believe that the beach will be closed, of course. We also had a meeting with The Harbour Chief who is interested in the Shipwreck and showed his anxiety. The necessary actions must be taken, buoys must be put in like every year to get closer to the distance needed for people to take pictures. Now we can go all the way to the shipwreck. We will present some documents to the MP, the Deputy Governor and the Mayor because the season has started. It will be a good year for the island. We are lucky that the position of Mayor has changed. The previous four years the island remained inactive. The previous Municipal Authority was the worst that could happen to our Island. We had a Mayor who hated entrepreneurship. Fortunately, the climate has changed. We see a fresh breathe of air.”
For his part, the President of the Ship Consortium Porto Vromi – Maries Dionysis Giatras noted: “The beach has shrunk even more than last year, so in no way can it accommodate the crowd that wants to visit the Shipwreck and believe me the photo is better that visitors take without boats in front of the beach and the “Panagiotis” ship, because everything is a photo! We can bathe in many other places. We are optimistic about this season, the messages are positive from tourism field who bring people to Zakynthos. The teachers who are studying the situation ion regards to repairs from the National Metsovio Polytechnic are very serious and I am sure that the Member of Parliament has already made sure – with the completion of the study – that the money is found to advance the development of the wider area and the rescue of the Shipwreck”.
Mr. Giatras emphasized that visitors still want to see the Wreck and added that they have not understood much about the damage and change in the vessel. “I brought a group from Brazil and when we got to the Shipwreck, they said their dream had come true. People go crazy when they come here. They haven’t figured out the difference on the ship yet. If you compare it to other older photos, it looks like the missing piece is huge. I was one of those who asked for the beach to be closed. After we tried it last year I am 1,000% sure that Navagio beach should remain closed while the beach area remains small. At the moment the wave reaches 10 meters from “Panagiotis”, while in the past it was at 50-60 meters”.
