We know there has been a lot of confusion about the passport rules for UK travellers, so this short post should help clarify the current rules.
The UK government website has guidance saying that passports must meet two specific requirements for anyone who is planning to visit a country in the EU (not including Ireland).
- They must be less than 10 years old – from the date of issue – on the day you enter your destination*
- They must remain valid for at least three months after you leave
It’s recommended that if you’re travelling this summer, you should:
- Check your passport start and expiration dates
- Check the date requirements of your passport dates against the UK passport guidance
- If your passport is more than 10 years old on the day you go on holiday, contact the passport office*
- If your passport date expires within the 3 months before you’re due to return home from your holiday, contact the passport office
- If you do need to update your passport, do it asap, as the UK passport office is incredibly busy at present
If your passport doesn’t adhere to the new passport rules, you may find yourself unable to travel, so it’s worth checking asap. All the information can be found here on the UK Government website.
*Note: Some old UK passports may have rolled over months if they were renewed early, this is no longer an option since Brexit and the new style of UK passports.
