3rd Council meeting under strict measures due to COVID-19

The announcement of the Local Council for the decisions taken at the last meeting are as follows:-

The council’s 3rd meeting of 2020 was held in the hall of the Cultural Centre located in Solomos Square. The meeting took place behind closed doors, due to the measures against the pandemic of the coronavirus. According to the rules of hygiene and safety, compliance with the required distances and trying not to exceed the number of ten people.

The Local Council congratulates its fellow citizens, the villagers and all the people of Zakynthos who fight their daily battle, contributing by staying at home, the health personnel, the security forces and generally all those who help in the fight against this pandemic.

 

In the first issue of the agenda, “Placing and informing about the latest developments and actions of the Local Council”:-

they discussed the serious problem that is observed at banks,  especially at noon. It has been noticed that crowds of citizens form at the banks. The problems that have been created for the residents of the area of ​​Ag. Lucus and Ag. Pavlou, due to the technical services of DEH, where electricity  in many neighbourhoods of the city have not been provided.

The Local Council in collaboration with Mr. P. Koklas, Head of the Municipal Police Department, closed with an announcement in regards to the 1st Primary School and the stadiums in the area of Ag. Triada to prevent team sports, thus contributing to the fight against the pandemic.

They pointed out the lack of disinfection in the public areas of the city as well as the possibility offered for some necessary work due to the limited traffic within the city.

They propose to send a document to the Civil Protection Department, the Police, the Municipal Police and anyone else responsible in regards to overcrowding  around the banks and to implement a plan of attendance and withdrawal, in compliance with the necessary protection measures for the pandemic.

A request shall be sent to DEH as to when they will proceed with the restoration of the road and sidewalks and the completion of the works on the damages they have caused, in the area of ​​Ag. Lucus and Ag. Pavlos.  A document will also be sent to the Municipality in order to pressure and force DEH to ground the transformers and its substations

In the 2nd item of the agenda, “Question about the degree of harmonization of the Municipality with the protection measures for strays according to the latest circulars of the Ministry of Interior for the Local Authorities”.

They stated that animals are part of our life and we should take care of them.  That they should not be left unprotected at this unprecedented time. They propose to ask the competent services of the Municipality, to inform the Local Council and the citizens, what are the actions they have taken, what they intend to do in order to address the issue of strays. To activate the competent services for vaccination, sterilization. , to place feeders in various parts of the city and in the neighbourhoods, even in the adoption of strays.

The 3rd item on the agenda, “Question about the actions of the Municipality regarding the program” HELP AT HOME “and its extension due to the emergency”,

they suggest that a question will be sent to KEDIZ and the Deputy Mayor Mrs. Kapsabeli,  as to what stage the program is? Home help, what the relevant services have done and what they intend to do in order to expand the program due to the emergency of the pandemic. Are the needs covered? Are citizens facing a problem served? Are there staff at Home Help who can serve weak citizens so that they do not become unfortunate themselves? Are the elderly who cannot move and need the purchase of medicines and the supply of necessary goods served? The needs are met by the cars that the program has in the city and if not by asking for the help of the Ministry of Interior if it is possible to man the program with another car to help our society during these days.

In the 4th issue of the agenda: “Question about progress in everyday life (Wells, potholes, Electric lighting, cutting grass – trees, disinfection, cleaning of bins)”.

They said that, at this time due to the pandemic there are no cars in the city, so therefore the opportunity to do some work in collaboration with the competent services of the Municipality, in order to take care to show a better picture to our fellow citizens and tourists after the end of this situation we are experiencing should be taken advantage of.

They suggest that there be surveillance crews from the Municipality and that attention should be drawn there, in order to repair damage not only in the city centre but also in the neighbourhoods. To place bins in specific parts of the city and benches. To cut grass-trees, to clean the ditches/trenches, to wash and disinfect the bins, to find a place where the citizens can leave bulky objects (even the rented space was mentioned by the Deputy Mayor of the city) and disinfect buildings.

In the 5th item of the agenda, “Measures to control the entrance gates of the city in view of Easter (Ports, Airports)”.

Mr. Meintanis, member of the local council on this issue said that, in the difficult and historic days of the pandemic we live in The mayor himself would have to make an intervention himself or through the Municipal Police at the Port and in Kryoneri  during the hours of 5-8 in the afternoon when there is a crowd. Proposals were then heard from all members of the Local Council and they decided to send a document to the Civil Protection, the Coast Guard, the Police and the Municipal Police to conduct strict checks at the island’s entrance gates in Port and at the Airport in order to deal with the pandemic. The Municipality and the state, now that the Zakynthian society needs support psychologically, must stand by their citizens and the churches must abide by all the decisions of the Holy Synod.

Issues related to “Citizens’ Requests” were not discussed due to anti-pandemic measures.
