Mayoral elections haven’t just taken place on Zakynthos recently, it’s been reported that the Mayor of Ithaca, Dionisis Stanitsas was re-elected and shortly after, handed out reusable fabric bags to local students. The Mayoral authorities have decided to ban plastic bags and will replace them with fabric bags, which have been proved to be more durable and last much longer than plastic ones. These fabric bags, which are environmentally friendly, will be given out to residents at no cost.
Mayor Dionisis Stanitsas was quoted as saying, “The Municipality of Ithaca is banning plastic bags by starting informing the students of the schools and distributing textile bags in the context of environmental protection. The bags will be distributed free of charge at the Ithaca Command Center.”
This is great initiative by the Mayor of Ithaca and hopefully it will be something that will spread throughout the Ionian islands and to Zakynthos itself.
