Friday’s storm didn’t cause too many problems for the Island of Zakynthos. However one cause for concern was in the village of Anafonitria. Due to strong winds a huge pine tree toppled over bringing down electrical cables with it.
Other Mountain areas such as Maries had a few problems due to the strong wind as well. A tin roof flung across the electrical cables causing havoc.
Causing a blackout around the Island, the Fire Department immediate arrived at the area to corner off traffic. Special equipment had to be brought in for the cables to be replaced.
Obviously getting power back took time. With in the village of Anafonitria it wasn’t till later in the afternoon that homes and businesses had supply.
The cemetery of Agio Dimitri also had damages. The strong wind ripped up marble slates and knocked down crosses. The president of the village Petros Stamiris was at the scene and immediately informed residents of the damage.
Noting that this type of storm was something new to the residents. Not only did the tree come tumbling down the winds seemed to have ripped through some of the mountain areas. Fortunately, Zakynthos did not see any severe damage caused nor injuries to her residents.
