Traffic ban: Changes coming in regards to movement restrictions

Due to the great concern within the government just two weeks before Easter of fears of an increase in travel, changes to restrictions may occur.

Scientific data so far has shown that Greece is in a better position than most European countries and this is largely due to – according to Mr. Tsiodras – the strict measures taken by the government in time.

According to the latest data, there are 1,544 confirmed cases in our country and 56 people have died from coronavirus.

To keep the outbreaks low and keep the virus from spreading, the government is considering tightening measures over the next 24 hours.

Greater fines for offenders, sms limits and time limits on each request of movement are estimated by government officials to help reduce unnecessary spreading.

Ten meaures ahead of Easter.

According to the newspaper “Ta Nea” there are ten measures that will apply until the end of May and will relate to unnecessary travel.

The new wave of measures include:

  1. Increase of fines for unnecessary circulation.
  2. New Gathering of people limit (less than 10 people), it was up to ten.
  3. Exclusion of public spaces.
  4. Special confirmation of movemnet for senior citizens
  5. Approximately 2 sms daily
  6. Different travel time limits
  7. Police checks on highways, ports, stations, bus stops ect.
  8. Closure of tolls
  9. Moving out of the municipality of residence, once only and with a residence certificate
  10. Closed Mass on Holy Week in selected metropolitan churches.

Emergency measures for Easter

Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis spoke to Mega about emergency measures, police work and the government’s Easter plans.

The minister initially congratulated the citizens who abide by the rules of self-restraint. “We need to congratulate all our fellow citizens, because most follow the plans of our scientists and the government’s decisions to deal with the coronavirus epidemic,” he said, adding that “if any corrections were made, it would be an issue to consider in the coming days.

Regarding the violations identified at this time, the Minister of Citizen Protection stressed that the number of those recorded daily is negligible.

Concerning what has been said about the excessive measures taken, Mr Chrysochoidis stressed that while human rights were limited, everything was being done to limit the epidemic.

The more stringent the implementation of the measures, the faster we will come out of the crisis and enjoy our individual freedoms,” the minister said.

On Easter, Mr. Chrysochoidis emphasized once again that there is no question about people moving to the villages for Easter.

A ban on travel between the islands is being considered.

The scrutiny of even stricter measures on the movement to islands has been announced by the Greek Minister of Shipping, Yiannis Plakiotakis.

“What we are thinking is to stop unnecessary movements between the islands except for workers or for health reasons,” the minister said characteristically,

According to him, requests are being made mainly from small islands to prevent visitors from moving unnecessarily there.

He noted, in fact, that “out of the 110 inhabited islands in Greece only 9 have referral hospitals and only Crete has a Covid-19 patient care infrastructure”.

“If we make sure that we have satisfactory dispersal levels in April we can be optimistic that we will return to normality with the fewest possible losses,” said Mr Plakiotakis, who also referred to the sharp decline in passenger traffic.
