Dated May, 9th and whilst out at Lagana Bay, Panagiotis Velianitis came across some of our first visitors for the season. The famous loggerhead sea turtle known as Caretta Caretta has returned
However, the National Marine Park of Zakynthos noticed that turtles have appeared since last month. Due to most of us being in lockdown it would be obvious no one has seen them until now.
Speaking to our Marine Park, Zakynthos Informer was told that the turtles have returned to mate. Their mating season usually is in the months of late March to early June.
As seen in the recent video of Giannis Potamitis taken three weeks ago.
Their egg laying season has not started as yet. They will start anytime soon and this is when our Marine Park officers will ask visitors to the beach areas to obey to the rules and regulations of the park. Those rules we have included in a post link below.
At the moment our Marine Park has been doing its daily routine checks as they have done throughout winter. As soon as the nesting season starts they will be at their kiosks once again giving information. Their job among other things in regards to maintaining the Marine Park, includes the daily counting and controlling of nests. Placement of protection cages where necessary and relocation of the nest if eggs have been laid in an unsuitable area.
