Today is international Holocaust day.
It is a day when we respectfully remember all those who tragically lost their lives in the Second World War in such awful circumstances.
Zakynthos was a small flame of hope that burned brightly during the war when two brave men Bishop Chrysostomos and Mayor Loukas Karrer saved the entire Jewish residents of Zakynthos.
On 09 September 1943, a German Commandant of Zakynthos, demanded a list of all Jewish island residents. The Mayor and Bishop presented him with just two names; their own. They refused to give up the Jewish population and 275 Jewish island residents. The bravery of the Mayor and Bishop saved many lives and ultimately saw them become heroes of the war. A lasting memorial to them now stands in Zante Town.
