Experts and the government remain concerned in the run-up to Easter as to whether or not travel outside the prefecture should be allowed. Coronavirus outbreaks remain high, health system pressure and the need to open schools immediately after Easter cause hesitation for further easing of restrictive measures.
Achilleas Gikas member of the Ministry of Health Expert Committee spoke about the images of crowds in the squares of Athens.
“The youth thinks they are invulnerable,” he said characteristically, speaking to TV station Open. While he stressed that with the self tests we will have relief from the pandemic. He also mentioned that we should exchange Easter with our summer and that in the coming days there will be the final plan for tourism.
The committee will evaluate a lot
“The committee will evaluate a lot this week. We see that we will be over 800 in the next 2 weeks. “Anyone who is reasonable sees that the load does not allow large openings,” he said, while emphasizing that we should exchange Easter with summer. “The decision will be made after Holy Monday. “When people make programs, the virus laughs,” he said.
Regarding the opening of schools, Mr. Gikas said that the issue will be considered after Easter. “The plan that is being worked on for the opening of tourism is very good. We will have the plan for the next 8 days and it will give the feeling abroad that there is security in Greece. “After 14/5, when tourism will open, logically, the movements for the Greeks will also open”, he said.
On Easter Monday the cases will drop to 1,600
Demosthenes Sarigiannis, professor of environmental engineering at AUTh, stated that there is a tendency to de-escalate and that on Easter Monday the cases will drop to 1,600. “In the last week we have a clear de-escalation. We are in a mild de-escalation throughout the country. The de-escalation will be seen in Thessaloniki from next week. As, the stores did not open earlier in Thessaloniki, this stopped the growth process. On Easter Monday we may drop to 1600 cases from 2,800. And the intubated to go down to 690 – which is still a high number. “There is a downward difference in ages,” he said.
Do not allow “Easter in the village”
The professor expressed his opposition to the Easter outing and noted that travel between prefectures and regions should not be allowed. “I am against it, because mass mobility creates an increase in contacts. “After 2 years we will get rid of the virus, by November we will reach a level of high immunity in the population”, he pointed out.
