Everyone on Zakynthos was shocked yesterday to see the smoke coming from fires on Kefalonia. The news is that the terrible forest fire that broke out on our neighbours island is now under control.
Firefighters, totalling 106 men, and 27 vehicles, assisted by air support, worked tirelessly to gain control of the terrible fire which was burning on seven different fire fronts. The fire service is staying at the scene to ensure that there’s no fire reignition.
Sadly, however, it’s estimated that approx 10,000 acres of Kefalonia forest was destroyed in the fire, including olive groves. It’s also thought that there may also be loss of animals/wildlife in the forests too.
Thankfully there have been no reports of loss of life. Residents who were evacuated from their homes in the villages of Agia Irini, Kapandriti, Kremmendi and Markopolo have now been allowed to return to their homes. The areas around the fire smell of ash, but will dissipate over time.
This has been an awful event, the cause of which was thought to have been started accidentally, but still being investigated. We’d like to thank Peter Lee in Kefalonia for the photos, our thoughts are with our Kefalonian neighbours at this time.
