The first part of the project is expected to be completed before the summer and the start of the new tourist season, which for decades has hampered Zakynthos concerns the construction of the Xygia – Alykes road.
The original work was divided into two sections, after the original contractor had left and after serious problems with subsidence which had not been anticipated in the original study.
The contract for the construction of 700,000-euros “Alykes-Xigia Road, Section A” project, was signed last July by the former Regional Governor and the funding comes from Public Investment Program appropriations.
The first section of the project includes interventions in the area of “Tigania” Alykes along the road to Hartata. The big issue is how the work will be scheduled and funding for the second phase of the project titled “Xigia – Alykes Road Phase B” which regards a remaining 1,300 metres that includes the area Lapeda and the portion that presented landslide problems in Kolosyrti. For this part of the road The Regional Unit of Zakynthos (ΠΕΖ) is willing to go forward with a supplementary study to restore the area and deal with landslides. Then funding will have to be found for these works in which cost is expected to be significant.
