Agalas, restoration of the “blue” school

The project of repairing the roof and shaping the courtyard of the Agalas Museum is in the process of implementation after the signing of the Program Contract by the Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa – Tsagaropoulou and the Mayor of Zakynthos Mr. Nikitas Aretakis Mr. Giannis Kladis.

The object of the Program Contract is the study and execution of repair works of the old “blue” school Agalas, a two-storey building built in the late 19th century and is a typical example of Ionian traditional architecture.

Welcoming the signing of the Program Contract, the Regional Governor stated that the execution of such a project is an added value and acquires content that will contribute to the cultural identity and history of our place, and completes a process that started from the previous regional authority.

The roof of the building shows serious damage to both the load-bearing structure and the cladding, resulting in leakage from rainwater which in turn has caused extensive damage to the ceiling, the underlying wooden floor, the wooden frames and the coatings. Materials and techniques will be used such that the traditional morphology of the building is not altered at all and so its original form is preserved.

Outside the building, works will be carried out to complete the configuration of the courtyard with local stone paving, installation of flower beds, seats, trash cans, lighting fixtures of traditional morphology and lamps of discreet highlighting of the buildings.

The Regional Unit of Zakynthos has prepared and approved the study by its Technical Service. It will auction and execute the project and will arrange for the receipt for use of the project, by the Municipality of Zakynthos which undertakes the maintenance of the old school Agalas after the end of the project and after the end of the maintenance completion time by the contractor.
