Located along the Adriatic and Ionian Sea, our neighbouring country Albania lies. It is also known to experience regular seismic activity.
Today, news of a 6.4R has brought several buildings down and has forced residents to flee in terror.
An earthquake on the 21st September of this year shook the country with a 5.6R, damaging about 500 houses and destroying some. Today’s earthquake seems to be the follow through of September’s jolt. At 04:58 in the same area the 6.4R struck within the sea area of Durres,. Its focal depth was of 10km and shortly after a 5.3R in the same area was recorded. It is a very active seismic area with similar sizes in the past.
CNN reports that at least 6 people have been killed while over 300 have been injured.
In many areas affected by the earthquake there are serious problems in electricity and telecommunications. There is confusion on the streets, with citizens on the streets, and the government calls for the roads to remain open. It is also reported that Albanian’s Prime Minister, Edi Rama went to Durres, which was hit hardest.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis contacted his Albanian counterpart, Edi Rama, by phone to express his support after the devastating earthquake hit the neighbouring country.
At the same time, Mr. Mitsotakis instructed the Emergency Services known as EMAK to leave immediately for Albania, to step in to assist in rescue investigations. He also stressed to Mr Rama that Greece is ready to contribute in any other way it may need.
Zakynthos Informer have many Albania members. Our our sincere condolences to those who have lost family members. Whilst our thoughts are also with those who are suffering at this moment.
