Bad odours at Airport raise concern

According to Airport Chief, Mr Spyros Kladis, the bad odours at the airport are a cause for concern once again. This time

The alarm bells ring – once again – the Airport chief, Mr  Spyros Kladis reports about the problem of foul smells at the airport and with a new document sent to the local authorities asking for them to consider the possible removal of the Waste Management Centre from the area of the airport, to an area that will not affect the operation of the airport. The document has been sent to the Municipality, The Waterboard Association of Zakynthos, The Waste Management CEntre of Zakynthos, the Health Directorate of the Ionian Region, Zakynthos and the Department of Environment Zakynthos, while reporting to ‘FRAPORT GREECE / ZTH Airport Manager’ Zakynthos Tourism Deputy Regional Minister PIN and Zakynthos MP.

In more detail, the Airport Director’s document, inter alia, states: “Following on (5) and (6) above, which highlighted the problem of smell at Zakynthos International Airport, coming from the nearby waste water treatment plant of the Zakynthos Public Sewerage Company (DEYAZ), we know that the problem continues to exist with intense tension and around the clock, causing severe discomfort to visitors and Airport employees.

In addition, on 31/8/2019, a fire broke out at the premises of Zakynthos Solid Waste Management Agency (FODSA), which posed a potential serious risk to the security of the Airport due to FODSA’s immediate proximity to the recycling maneuvering area. Given the uncontrolled accumulation of waste in this area, it is very likely that such incidents will occur again. In view of the above, please consider relocating the above services (Waste Management Center and Waster Water Treatment plant) from the airport area, to a more convenient location that will not in any way affect the operation of Zakynthos International Airport, as required by law ” .

Recalling that at the end of July, the Airport Authority had informed the local authorities in writing of this huge problem and had asked for the necessary action to address it. Specifically, in his letter, he said, among other things: “We know that in recent days a problem of intense ordour has reappeared at Zakynthos International Airport, which we suspect comes from the nearby facilities of the Zakynthos Wastewater Treatment Plant. We had a similar problem last year, as we had informed you with the above (1) related and for which, following an autopsy conducted by services. Last year, Hydroeconomics & Spatial Planning Zakynthos (2 related above), was found to have originated from the illegal dumping of sludge by the waterboard of Zakynthos on an adjacent plot, unbeknown to the owner. In order to avoid a recurrence of such phenomena which have an adverse impact on the public health and the tourism product of the island, please take action on the part of the competent authorities. “
