Bella Hadid meets Antiquities as VOGUE returns to Greece

Iconic star model Bella Hadid met Greek antiquities as fashion magazine VOGUE returned to Greece after seven years of absence on Sunday, March 31. The 22-year-old American beauty has posed for the magazine’s cover of its April 2019 comeback edition.

Vogue Greece will be the luxury magazine’s 26th international edition. Publishers expect the country’s economic recovery following a debt crisis will revive an appetite for glossy fashion and lifestyle prints.

“Dear Vogue Greece, welcome back again,” Anna Wintour, Vogue editor-in-chief since 1988, wrote in the Greek comeback edition titled “Eyes on the future,” euronews quoted.

“Your return after years of absence fills us with joy. Greece faced problems and lived dramatic moments, I can only imagine how tough it was. However, the signs of recovery are now visible, even here in America.”

Vogue Greece will be run by a 29-year old editor-in-chief Thaleia Karafyllidou.

“Karafyllidou will redefine the luxury title with a disruptive, youthful vision,” Vogue Australia notes in an article featuring the youngest print editor-in-chief for Vogue yet.

The Thessaloniki-born law and communications graduate is now a PhD candidate in Intellectual Property Law, and has held various senior marketing roles both in the UK and in Greece over the last 10 years.

On the phone from her Athens office, the newly-appointed EIC told Vogue Australia about the challenges she encountered while relaunching the luxury title.

“Greece was in recession for 10 years. We are bringing the Vogue brand back to the country in a new era where ‘luxury’ has been redefined. It’s not just about a beautiful pair of shoes or a handbag – now ‘luxury’ is your free time and the time that you spend offline.”

Karafyllidou manages a youthful Vogue editorial team that takes a progressive approach to the disruptive nature of today’s media landscape, in Greece and beyond. “We are the age of the Millennial and Generation Z. The majority of my team are around the ages of 24 or 25 to 30. They know exactly what is happening because they are living it. And what they live, they write,” she said.

Vogue Hellas originally came out in Greece in March 2000 but its publisher Lyberis went bankrupt in 2012 when advertising dried up during the economic crisis. With unemployment at nearly 28% at the height of the recession, the country’s appetite for high fashion and lifestyle goods dampened.
