Changes to Kteo / Mot

Private KTEO will proceed, from now on, to immobilise vehicles provided that they find dangerous shortages, for road safety.

According to the Joint Ministerial Decision published in the Official                     Government Newspaper (FEK) on 1st February, the procedure for vehicle  immobilisation at Private Vehicle Technical Control Centres, in cases that dangerous shortages are identified when carrying out a check, have been determined.

Until now, in the private KTEO, the immobilisation of dangerous vehicles was extremely rare, despite the fact that there was such a provision since 2013.

As the president of the IKTEO Pan-Hellenic Association, Kostas Vikas, explains in the “Ethnos” newspaper, to get a car in such a bad condition to be considered dangerous has not happened for years, which means that their owners either rectified any problems before going for the check or if the vehicle is a complete wreck, they do not go for a KTEO, risking the appropriate fines and penalties through electronic crossings or roadside checks.

“What’s changing now is that the Police are also involved. From now on, if a car is dangerous, KTEO must alert not only the Ministry of Transport and the Region but also the traffic police. However, we have no right to prohibit a vehicle owner from moving it. This is a matter for the police authorities, “Mr Vikas explained.

The process

If the check reveals that a car is dangerous, the license plates and the registration certificate are removed. The person concerned can only move it to the repair workshop in such a way that is safe for road traffic and, after being repaired, to a KTEO for a recheck so as to detect the rectification of the dangerous shortages.

The above mentioned traffic data will be removed by a police officer who will be notified by IKTEO for this purpose. The IKTEO grants, to the person concerned, the relevant document, while the traffic data is sent by the police authority to the relevant Regional Transport and Communications department, or to that indicated by the person concerned. The return of this traffic data will be after retesting competence from the Regional Transport and Communications Department by presenting a DTE – Technical Check sheet – without dangerous shortages from the KTEO where retesting was conducted.

Provided that in the DTE issued there are no serious shortages noted, the KTEO will also provide the appropriate Indicative Technical Control badge which is affixed to the (rear) license plate by the Regional Transport and Communications department.
