PLEASE NOTE PHOTOS MAY CAUSE SHOCK.
Photos on a popular social media page of a dog in a shocking state after being shot has left Zakynthian citizens shocked.
Apparently the dog had escaped from his enclosure and had ventured to a nearby house, where it is believed the animal was causing problems with the poultry the owner of the property had. Instead of trying to get rid of the dog with more humane methods the owner of the property decided to get his gun out and shoot at the dog. As we can see in the pictures the dog has had damage to his eye and according to comments on the social media page may lose his eye. The owner of the dog has filed charges against the person who shot at his dog.
According to Law act 4039/2012, Article 16 titled” Abuse of Animals “, paragraph A:” … torture, abuse, maltreatment and abuse of any kind of animal, as well as any act of Article 20 of the Penal Code, stipulates in paragraph 2 that: “Infringers of the provisions of Article 16 (a) and (b) shall be punished by a term of imprisonment of at least one year (imprisonment from one to five years) and a fine of € 5,000 up to € 15,000. ” In fact, the legal framework for the detection of penalties in such cases of animal abuse is very strict if one considers that a negligent manslaughter may be subject to a much lower penalty, perhaps 10 months, without financial penalties.
As we all know abuse of animals is known worldwide, however, with the help of social media and of course actions on getting people brought to justice, as far as animal abuse is concerned within Zakynthos, all can help to bring awareness of the problem and perhaps lessen the accounts that animal lovers and animal welfare have to deal with.
