A recent study by the World Wildlife Fund in Greece has found that the most common piece of rubbish dropped and left on Greek beaches is the cigarette butt.
As part of their Adopt a Beach programme the World Wildlife Fund collected rubbish from 78 beaches across Greece. During the clean-up, they were helped by volunteers and in a statement, the World Wildlife Fund said they found Cigarette butts were the most common find in almost all cleaning operations in the world, with research noting that almost a third of all the waste collected was cigarette butts. In total 28,140 cigarette butts were found, equating to 1,407 packets of cigarettes!
Other commonplace items recovered during this collection were bags, baby wipes, bottles, glass, lids, straws, and Styrofoam. There were also many random pieces of plastic. All these items are harmful to the natural environment and would take decades or longer to break down.
It’s very sad to see such a huge amount of rubbish being discarded. We would ask that if you’re visiting Zakynthos, please help us to protect our environment and wildlife by putting your rubbish in a bin or taking it back to your accommodation.
