Coronavirus:- Schools and exams

The new “We Stay Safe” project will be implemented from May 4, when the gradual return to the new regularity will begin.

Today,  the Minister of Education, Niki Kerameos, together with Professor Sotiris Tsiodras and the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection, N. Hardalias, will announce the details of the students’ return to their desks.

As the Prime Minister announced yesterday in his speech, on May 11, the students of the 3rd year Senior High will return to their desks. On May 18, the students of High School and the other classes of the Senior High will follow, while the secondary school centres and the Foreign Language Centres will reopen with a strong recommendation from the government for education to be online.

The plan of the Ministry of Education provides for the completion of the courses in the high schools and Senior High on June 12, in order to start the nationwide exams.

There will also be 15 students per class, while conditions will be created to protect the health of children using antiseptics.

Schools will operate with other rules that will limit – as far as possible – co-ordination. Distance learning will continue to support children who, for special reasons, do not have to come to class. Primary and kindergartens remain closed. They may, I repeat, may open on June 1, and only if we are absolutely sure that the course of the epidemic is slowing down, “Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in his speech yesterday.

National exams

According to information, the national exams are expected to start around June 20 and end in mid-July.

A larger number of rooms will be used to hold them, so that the number of candidates in each room does not exceed 10. Thus, the purpose is to use class rooms also from high schools.

The same information states that there will be two supervisors per room or one for the rooms where there are five students.

The distance between the desks will be more than two meters and one by one they will enter the rooms after using antiseptic. The same will apply to supervisors. There will be special care for students belonging to vulnerable groups.

Operation of schools with continual schedules.

Regarding the operation of schools, the application of a continual schedule is being examined, in order to achieve the reduction of students per class and to avoid congruence.

Thus, a number of students will take, for example, a lesson from 8.30 to 11.30 and another after 2.30. It is also possible that afternoon classes will be open.  Another possibility is that the school year will be extended and the new one will start earlier . At this stage nothing has been announced.

The use of face masks.

The use of masks is also considered mainly by high school students, while where a significant number of cases that have occurred, the schools in that area will be closed, where the cases occurred only and not all schools across the country.

 What will happen to universities?

Universities as a whole provide distance education at a rate of 96.99%. The remaining percentage is for laboratory courses that cannot be done online.

It is estimated that the courses at the universities will be completed with distance education, while in mid-July the exam is expected to be completed. Yesterday, in fact, the home distribution of textbooks to students throughout the country and Cyprus began, with the aim of contributing to the continuation of the educational project with distance education.

It is worth noting that for this spring semester, both for those who applied, which amounted to 225,813, and the number of books, which reached 1,184,988, were more than in previous years.
