Airline plan from Thessaloniki to Athens – ICUs are filling up too quick
The ICUs of Thessaloniki are at their breaking point with patients who have coronavirus, while the pressure is constantly increasing for those of Athens.
Within the week that begins, the ICUs of Thessaloniki are expected to present a problem, estimates to the on-line Greek newspaper ethnos.gr , a high-ranking executive of the Health sector, since they are rapidly being filled day by day with coronavirus patients. That is why, as the same sources in ethnos.gr emphasized, in the next 24 hours another ICU covid section will be created in hospitals of Thessaloniki, in order for the capital of Macedonia to take a breath. In particular, patients with other diseases that are in intensive care, have already started to be transferred to private clinics in order to free beds.
The new Intensive Care Unit will have 10 beds for patients with coronavirus, but it is estimated that this too will not last long as new cases of the pandemic increase daily. Today Thessaloniki has 25 ICU covid beds vacant, a number that is not enough even for a few 24 hours based on the dramatic increase in new cases. On Saturday (31/10) 839 new incidents were recorded in Thessaloniki
That is why, as credible sources of ethnos.gr emphasize, the Ministry of Health and EKAB are preparing an air transportation plan in order, if necessary, to transport patients with covid from Thessaloniki by helicopter to Athens within a week, where the picture is somewhat better.
The emergency plan by Kikilias is in force
So, the State moved immediately and the Minister of Health, Vassilis Kikilias implemented an emergency plan for Thessaloniki. According to the plan that has already been implemented, 43 new ICU-COVID beds were secured in order to increase the capacity of the NSS in Thessaloniki. More specifically, 8 ICU-COVID beds are added to the General Hospital “Agios Pavlos”, 10 beds to the General Hospital “G. Gennimatas “, 10 beds at PGNTH AHEPA, 4 beds at 424 Military Hospital, 6 beds at GNTH” G. Papanikolaou “and 5 beds at the General Hospital of Halkidiki. Mr. Kikilias has called to inform the competent heads of the parliamentary parties, tomorrow Monday, November 2 at 14:00, at the Ministry of Health. Immediately after the briefing, the Minister of Health will go to Thessaloniki.
The ICUs of Athens
In Athens so far the picture is relatively better than in Thessaloniki, as it has 75 to 80 empty ICU beds out of a total of 144. However, this better picture is not expected to last long based on the pace of new imports. According to high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Health at ethnos.gr, if the increase of serious cases continues, in 10 to 15 days the situation in the ICUs of Athens will be similar to that of Thessaloniki. It should be noted that today throughout the country there are about 150 vacant ICU beds in various hospitals (along with those in Athens and Thessaloniki).
Zakynthos ICU
Zakynthos has five beds within the Intensive Care Unit of the General Hospital of Zakynthos. They all have entered into full operation since October 5th, 2020.
The Intensive Care Unit of our Hospital already operates normally with 11 nurses and 3 intensive care physicians, covering the needs of Zakynthos and others around Greece.
By the end of the year, the Intensive Care Unit will be strengthened with additional recruitment of medical and nursing staff, while within the next period, new reinforcements will be announced that will concern the logistical infrastructure of our Hospital.
They continue to work daily and tirelessly with a sense of responsibility in order to ensure high quality health services for all our fellow citizens.
