Since taking on the premiership, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson hasn’t had the easiest time. The UK is extremely focused on Brexit right now and the situation is changing on a daily basis. At the start of this week there were a number of votes in Parliament relating to Brexit. The most crucial vote was the Prime Minister’s request for a General Election. The results were:
293 MPs in favour
46 Against
311 MPs chose not to vote
The result of that vote was that the Prime Minister lost meaning no General Election will currently take place.
The proposed Prorogation of Parliament also took place this week, this means that UK Parliament has now been officially suspended and no Parliamentary business will take place for the next five weeks.
Today however, a Scottish Court ruled that the Prime Minister’s decision to suspend parliament is unlawful. The decision made by three judges of the inner house of the Scottish Supreme civil court, and requests have now been made by Senior Politicians to recall Parliament. As yet there has been no statement from the Prime Minister relating to this. Neither has there been a statement from the Queen, although that is not unusual.
A statement on the Scottish ruling said: “This was an egregious case of a clear failure to comply with generally accepted standards of behaviour of public authorities.”
A source from Downing Street has stated that they will seek an appeal to the Scottish Court decision via the UK Supreme Court. This is expected to take place next week.
Brexit still remains top priority for the UK Government and at the moment the exit date for the UK is still tabled as 31 October 2019. At present however, there is still no indication as to whether a deal will be agreed, but many think it’s looking more likely, in light of Prorogation, that it may end up being a “No Deal” Brexit.
