ECHR elects Greek judge Sicilianos as its new President

Greek judge Linos Alexandre-Sicilianos has been elected President of the European Court of Human Rights. “His term as president will begin on 5 May 2019,” the ECHR statement said. It is the first Greek to hold the court’s presidency.

Sicilianos has been a judge of the ECHR since 18 May 2011 and will succeed Italian judge Guido Raimondi. The mandate of the new president will be in effect until May 2020.

Greek judge Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos was elected on Monday to run the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

“The European Court of Human Rights has today elected Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos (Greek) as its new President,” the court said in a press release.

The 58-year-old will succeed Guido Raimondi of Italy on May 5. His term will last three years.

Sicilianos has served as a judge with the Strasbourg-based court for almost eight years and was appointed its vice president in May 2017.

He will oversee the implementation of the civil and political rights of 800 million Europeans in 47 nations that ratified the European Convention on Human Rights.
