Elections 2019 – Results

The 1st round of elections, took place on Sunday, 26th May, resulting in quite a few surprises.

As you may remember the elections were up to four:

European
Regional
Local
Community

The results of the voting, for Zakynthos in the Regional elections, with 88% of the votes being incorporated into the system (the votes have been counted at each voting station, but due to the process being used – phone instead of electronic – if they are not ‘lodged’ with the Ministry of the Interior they can’t be classed as official) are:

Ionia Dinato kathe nisi psila – Mrs Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou – 29.13% – 28.028 votes,
AN.A.S.A yia ta Ionia nisia – Mr Galiatsatos – 22.26% – 21.413 votes,
Ionios Simmahia – 18.89% – 18.175 votes,
Lye-ee-key Sispirosi Ionion Nison – 11.77% – 11.327,
Eptanisiakey Protovoulia – 8.73% – 8.395,
Elliniki Avyee yia to Ionio – 4.08% – 3.927 votes,
Anipotakto Ionion – 3.20% – 3.028 votes,
Antikapitalistiki Aristera sta Ionia – 1.94% – 1.866 votes.

Meaning there will be a second round, between the first two winners of the first round.

The results of Local elections, with 84% of the votes, in the system are:

Me Areti kai Tol-me – Mr Aretaki – 22.98% – 4.460 votes,
Mazee Allazoume ti Zakynthos – Mr Armenis – 20.37% – 3.954 votes,
Enotiki Zakynthini Kinisi – 18.23% – 3.539 votes,
Anadrasi 2019 – 15.00% – 2.911 votes,
Lye-ee-key Sispirosi Zakynth os – 7.59% – 1.473 votes,
Zakynthos-Anatropee-Anayennisi – 5.06% – 983 votes,
Epanakinnisi Tora – 4.44% – 862 votes,
Poreia Proodou – 3.95% – 766 votes,
Zakynthos me Filotimo – 2.38% – 462 votes.

Meaning there will be a second round, between the first two winners of the first round.

The 2nd round will take place, for both of the above-mentioned elections, on next Sunday, 2nd June. There is no need for crosses in this 2nd ballot, candidates for local councillors have been chosen from the first round. So as a voter in the 2nd round, you just need to place the combination-of-your-choice ballot paper in the envelope.

The results of the Regional elections, though, held a surprise for the government. Greece is ‘divided’ into 13 regions. As the results, for the Europeans, started coming in, the regions one by one became blue – the colour of the opposition party. Nine of these regions are now blue,  two are pink – government – and two white, independent candidates. As a result of this the opposition party leader, Mr Kiriakos Mitsotaki, New Democracy party, demanded the resignation of the PM and early general elections, immediately. The reply from the PM came late Sunday night, to the effect that once the 2nd round of the Local / Regional elections are completed, he will get the ball rolling for general elections. No date has been set, but laws of the land have a minimum limit of 20 days, so earliest possible date is from 23rd June, with 30th June being the expected by journalists.
