The leaders of the European Commission, Parliament and Council visited Greece, today and sent a strong message to Ankara, saying Europe will not bow to the migration pressure at its external borders
People who tried to enter Greece in the past few days did not come from the war-torn Syrian province of Idlib, but had been living safely in Turkey for a long period of time.
From 06.00 on Monday morning 2/3/2020 to 06.00 on this morning, an amount of 5,183 persons were not allowed to enter Greece illegally in the Evros region. At the same time, 45 people were arrested. These people were mainly from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Morocco and Bangladesh.
During the night about 1000 people massively attempted to enter Greek territory illegally in the Evros Delta. The massive attempt to illegally enter the Greek-European territory was prevented by very powerful police forces at the site. Subsequently, most retreated back into Turkish territory.
The Greek army and police continue to monitor with increasing readiness at all points along the land border and the Evros River, with a particular emphasis on the south currently receiving the most pressure.
The detainees have been transferred to immigration detention centers and convicted (for illegal entry) to detention facilities.
