Fake licences and …. Dolce vita

In the long arm of the law of the “incorruptible” of EL.AS – Greek Police, seven members of the Directorate of Transport and two driving schools owners.

The big life, with expensive cars and glamorous nights out, had members of a circuit of government officials and driving school owners which sold driving licenses to prospective drivers. Yesterday, 14/03, the “incorruptible” of the police arrested nine people, among them seven members of the Directorate of Transport and two owners of driving schools in Kallithea and Glyfada. They came under the microscope of the authorities when they began to lead a life, not justified by their incomes.

The annex of the Ministry of Transport in Agios Dimitrios, where it was the headquarters of the circuit, was sealed by the decision of Attica Regional Director, Rena Durou, until investigations are completed. The same was done in the Piraeus and Islands Directorate in early February, when it was found that in 56 cases prospective drivers had obtained a licence without attending the theoretical examinations for KOK – highway code. Officials from the Ministry of Citizen Protection report that the ‘incorruptible’ have put under the microscope all the suspected Transport Directorates, in order to unravel the circuits that for years have been getting rich issuing fake  licences, the tangle of corruption has already begun to unfold.

In the latest case, in the annex of the Ministry of Transport at Agios Dimitrios, government officials took care to do house delivery of licences, in order to not put suspicions in their department, but also to impress their customers with the conveniences provided to them, as the candidates did not even go to the trouble to go and pick-up the licence. Indeed, in one case the circuit had even gone as far as setting up a mock exam room to make it look like the prospective drivers, who were handing over a ‘fakelaki’, were passing ‘under their own steam’. Among those arrested, according to reports, is the director of the annex of the Directorate of Transport at Agios Dimitrios.

However, as police sources say, he did not have the first say in the organization, but an employee of the Directorate. The investigation began last July, when executives of the annex began to be monitored, because their shady dealings had reached the “ears” of the Police ‘incorruptibles’. Police officers gathered information that they were asking prospective candidates from 2,000 to 2,500 euros to give them licences without the necessary examinations, theoretical and practical. During the investigations that took place, 14/03, in homes and driving schools in Kallithea and Glyfada 80.000 euros were found hidden. Police officers also seized, USB sticks and notes with prospective candidates of the circuit, that have come under the microscope. The Police, in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport, will move in the coming months to procedures in order to cancel the fake licences issued in the last ten months.
